Car Interior
What does "interior" mean?
Interior refers to when something is inside something.
What should you do if a check engine light comes on?
Don't wait. Bring the car in for inspection. Major damage to engine components can happen if you don't.

Car Exterior
What does "exterior" mean?
"Exterior" relates to something on the outside of something.
How do you know when it is time to replace your windshield wipers?
Change your windshield wipers when they scrape the windshield or they don't wipe the windshield well.
What is the difference between how hazard lights blink and how turn signals blinks?
Hazard lights blink on and off at the same time. Turn signal lights blink one at a time.
What component of a car helps the car to be less bouncy? What does it look like?
Parts of the suspension system (shock absorbers) look like springs and they help the car to ride smoothly.
What poisonous gas comes out of an exhaust pipe?
Carbon monoxide comes out of an exhaust pipe.
How can exhaust fumes become deadly?
Carbon monoxide is poisonous.
What is the purpose of a muffler?
Mufflers lower the noise level of the engine.
Describe how brakes work.
Brake calipers with brake pads squeeze the wheel discs (rotors). The friction causes the rotors to stop turning.
What is the difference between a wheel and a tire?
A wheel is metal and a tire is rubber covering the wheel.
What is tread?
Tread is the grooved surface of a tire that grips the road.
Describe what it means to rotate tires.
Rotating tires is when we switch positions of each tire from one wheel to another.
Why should someone rotate their tires?
The tread of tires will wear down unevenly. Rotating them helps the tires to wear down more evenly.
Why might it be wise to park in a spot where no car can park to the right of your car?
Chances are the driver will be the only person in the other car. If you park on the passenger side of the car, you are less likely to get your car dinged by the other driver.

Under the Hood
What is a dipstick?
A dipstick is a thin, flat rod for measuring the depth of oil.
Describe how to check your oil level.
Take the dipstick out of the oil tank. Wipe the oil off the dipstick. Put it back in the oil tank. Pull it out. Look at the level of oil left on the dipstick.
When checking the oil level, why do you wipe the dipstick one time before you measure the level of the oil?
The oil will slosh around as the car is moving. It will look like there is more oil in the car than there actually is if you don't wipe it off first.
Where should you store extra windshield wiper fluid?
Keep a bottle of extra windshield wiper fluid in the car (trunk).
What is a cause for "draining" your battery?
A car battery can drain while the car is not running but the lights are left on or a door is left open.
Describe how to jump start a car.
Use jumper cables to attach your battery to another car's battery. Use the energy from the other battery to start your car.
Describe how to attach jumper cables to a car battery safely.
Attach the positive cable to the positive cells AND negative cables to the negative cells on both batteries.
